WinNc File Functions
In this chapter you can find the basic operations for file management. Instead of the one-paneled Windows explorer, WinNc uses dual panels. One panel can be used as a source the other as a target. You can browse through directories by double-clicking or pressing ENTER. To copy, move or rename select the source files by pressing INS or using the right-mouse button. Then drag the files in any place in the other panel. WinNc will display a conformation to copy (F5) / move (F6) / compress (F5 - select compress) the files.
Copy (F5) Select a number of files with the INS key or use the right-mouse button. Drag the files to the other panel and WinNc will ask for a conformation to copy the files. You can also use the F5 keyboard shortcut instead of dragging.
Move (F6) Select a number of files with the INS key or use the right-mouse button. Press the move buttons in the lower toolbar. You can also use the F6 keyboard shortcut instead of dragging.
Rename (F6) You can rename files in WinNc by using the move function. Type in a different name and WinNc will rename the file to that file. Or you can rename by right-clicking on the file-icon and selecting rename in the menu. You can also use the windows method of slowly clicking on the filename.
Create directory (F7) You can create a new directory by using the shortcut-key F7. Or you can use the windows method. Right-click on a blank part of a panel and select "New directory" from the menu.
View and Edit (F3 en F4) With F3 you can view inside files. WinNc can view the following formats internally: JPG, GIF, BMP, TGA, WMF, PCX, MP3, WAV, FLC, DOCS, XLS, HTML, MID and AVI. If WinNc does not recognize the filetype it will use the internal HEX viewer similar to the one in NC for DOS. You can assign an external viewer to a specific filetype by pressing SHIFT-F3. If you press F3 on a directory, WinNc will calculate the size of the files in that directory (including all subdirectories) With F4 you can start the file or document in the application that they are associated with. Do you want to override the association and simply open the file in Notepad press SHIFT-F4. When you use F4 on a directory Explorer will open the directory.
Delete or Delete to trashcan (F8) Select a number of files with the INS key or use the right-mouse button. You can remove the selected files by pressing F8. You can also use the window method by pressing DEL.
Calculate Size (F9) Select a number of files with the INS key or use the right-mouse button. By pressing F9 you can calculate the size of all selected files.
Create shortcut (ALT-F9) Select one or a number of files with the INS key or use the right-mouse button. Drag the files to the other panel. While holding down the leftmousebutton, press the rightmousebutton and release the leftmousebutton. Select "create shortcut" in the appearing menu. If you normally drag from a WinNc panel to the desktop, WinNc will create a shortcut on the desktop.
Selecting a drive If you would like to change the drive of a panel you can use a number of methods. You can change drives by clicking the small driveicon on top of the panel. You can use the dropdownmenu to select a drive. For old NC-users the shortcutkeys ALT-F1 and ALT-F2 can be used to select panel one or two and change the driveletter.
Finding a Directory Faster In the "WinNc mode" you can start typing the start letter of a file and WinNc will jump to the file. In the Norton Commander mode you will need to use CTRL-ALT + first letter.
